Person detection and facial recognition are often confused but are fundamentally different capabilities with different technical requirements, governance implications and appropriate use cases.
What person detection does
Person detection applies a computer vision model to a video frame and returns a person class, confidence score and bounding box. It locates where a person is in the frame. It does not identify who the person is.
What facial recognition does
Facial recognition attempts to identify a specific individual by comparing facial features against a reference database. This is a separate capability with distinct technical requirements, data governance implications and regulatory considerations.
How BAV ONE uses person detection
BAV ONE uses person detection as the foundation for workflows such as intrusion detection, restricted-zone monitoring, people counting, perimeter surveillance and loitering detection. In all cases, the system detects the presence of a person class, not the identity of the individual.
Why this distinction matters
Deploying AI video analytics without understanding this distinction can lead to incorrect claims about system capabilities and inappropriate governance decisions. Organizations should be clear about what their system does and does not do.
